The Department of History of State and Law was founded in 1962. It’s head was a well-known scientist, Doctor of Law, professor Galagan Ivan Aleksandrovich (1930–1997). His area of scientific interests included issues of the theory of judicial liability. He also largely invested into designing into Russian theory of law, issues of administrative liability and law enforcement activity.
Associate of Law, professor Yachevskiy Vitaliy Vladimirovich has been the Chairperson since 1997. He teaches The Theory of Law and State, The History of Political and Legal Doctrines, The Issues of Theory of Law and States. His scientific researc his devoted to the history of political and legal doctrines and issues of theory of state and law. He presented his dissertation «Leo Tolstoy’s Socio-political and Legal Views» in 1990 году at the USSR Academy of Sciences Institute of State and Law.

For bachelors:

- Theory and The History of State and Law;
- History of State and Law in Russia;
- History of State and Law of Foreign Countries;
- Introduction to Political and Legal Theories;
- Issues of the Theory of state and law.
Elective courses:
- Legal Sociology;
- Legal Anthropology.
In 2012 the Department opened master course in direction:
- Theory and History of State and Law.
Scientific research is one of the main directions of the subdepartment. The teachers supervise work on dissertations in area 12.00.01 – the theory and history of state and law: the history of legal doctrines. The academic activity traditionally includes design and upgrading educational programs and preparation of various educational materials.
The Department has a full-time and part-time post-graduate course in special field 12.00.01 – the theory and history of state and law: the history of legal doctrines. The Department accept postgraduates for preparation for post-graduation entry exams and scientific research in their specific fields under supervision of Doctor of law, professor Y.V. Sorokina and Associate of Law, professor V.V. Yachevskiy.
The Department pays a lot of attention to the students’ scientific work. They do course and graduate qualification works in the department’s scientific field, take active part in students’ research groups, make reports at students’ conferences including all-Russia and international ones, and wrire scientific articles under the teachers’ supervision.
