The Department of Criminal Law has passed several milestones during its development:
- in 1960 the Department of Criminal Law, Procedure and Criminalistics distinguished itself from the Department of Discipline-specific Legal Sciences;
- in 1974 the Department of Criminal Law, Procedure and Criminalistics divided into two ones: the Department of Criminal and Correctional Labour Law and the Department of Criminal Procedure and Criminalistics;
- In 1987 the Department of Criminal Law and Criminalistics and the Department of Criminal Procedure were founded;
- In 1994 the Department of Criminal Law was founded.

The Department has its own magister’s programme «Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminal and Penal Law».
The Department issues collection of scientific papers «Criminal Law and Criminology».
